Center Trails Roller/Hillside Out-and-Back — 2.0

  • Clare and Miles Mills Rose Garden Myron and Jacqueline Blank Parkway Des Moines, IA, 50312 United States (map)

Got some nice hills in today. The clouds kept it cool! Thank you Andrea and Kathleen for strolling with me. I hope to see you all Tuesday, October 1st at Ewing Park.

Join us for an out-and-back walk along the north part of Rollercoaster and Hillside trails. We will meet on the west side of the Des Moines Art Center to avoid any possible construction at the pond or the pool. Park on Myron and Jacqueline Blank Pkwy by 10:00 a.m.

This route begins walking down the parkway, turns onto Rollercoaster, and crosses 45th Street onto Hillside. Just past the pool, we’ll turn around and return for a total of two miles. If the dirt trails are muddy, we will stay on the paved and crushed rock trails instead. Either way, we will walk slowly, think “stroll,” and no one will be left behind.

Both the dirt and paved parts of this route will be hilly—the trails are named Rollercoaster and Hillside, after all. The trail is dirt singletrack, punctuated with with roots and rocks. Hiking poles are useful, but not a necessity.

A few times a month I lead a Soft Trail Stroll on a different trail. This free series is designed to help people looking for a simple way to become more active and to increase appreciation of our local soft trails.

What is a soft trail? Simply, it is an unpaved trail. Its surface may be dirt, grass, or crushed rock/gravel. I am an avid mountain biker and know all these trails very well. I can guarantee that no one will get lost!
