Raccoon River Park — Explore

  • Raccoon River Park 2500 Grand Avenue West Des Moines, IA, 50265 United States (map)

Thanks for helping me explore Raccoon River Park! I hadn't been there in years, and then only once. It was great to have company as we walked the full crushed rock loop around the lake. I enjoyed seeing the construction of the pedestrian bridge over the Raccoon River to Walnut Woods State Park.

The singletrack trails we usually walk are too soft and squishy right now, but the weather is too nice not to walk somewhere! Join me at Raccoon River Park in West Des Moines to explore the crushed rock and paved trails throughout the park.

Meet in the parking lot west of the boat ramp by 10:00 a.m.

I don’t have a route or a distance planned. We will walk at “stroll” pace, and no one will be left behind or forced to walk farther than they want to.

Every week or so I lead a group walk on a different trail.

My goals for this series are to help people looking for a simple way to become more active, and to increase appreciation of our local soft trails.

What is a soft trail? Simply, it is an unpaved trail. Its surface may be dirt, grass, or crushed rock/gravel.
